DIBH with SGRT is an advanced radiation therapy technique that helps protect your heart, lungs, and liver while improving the accuracy of your treatment. It is used when radiation therapy is directed at the breast or chest.
DIBH (Deep Inspiration Breath Hold) means taking a big, deep breath in and holding it while the radiation is delivered. Taking a deep breath inflates your lungs, moving your heart and liver away from the radiation area — minimising side effects to those organs.
DIBH also helps keep structures in your chest from moving. Areas like the lungs shift during normal breathing, and holding your breath helps reduce this movement.
Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT) uses special cameras to track the surface of your body in real time with sub-millimetre accuracy. They confirm you are in the correct position and taking a deep breath before and during treatment — and eliminate the need for any skin markings or tattoos.
Your skin may change during radiation therapy. These changes are common, usually temporary, and can vary from person to person — including redness, dryness or itchiness, warmth or sensitivity, darkening, or peeling in some areas. These reactions are normal and usually improve within weeks after treatment ends.
